Diary Of An Assessor
Hello everybody my name is Louisa Jones and I am one of the new members of the Straight A team (or the new-be as I am called by my fellow colleagues). Since joining the team 6 months ago I have had to quickly adjust to the hectic lifestyle that comes with living in the hustle and bustle of the capital city as opposed to the Welsh countryside I am used to. The last 6 months have flown by and I have had the pleasure of meeting so many people who are associated with Straight A.
The most rewarding element of working for this company is seeing the effects education and learning can have on the individual. One case sticks out in my mind as reflecting what I understand to be the true spirit of Straight A. I shall call the learner Anne so not to reveal her true identity. Anne is a lady of a more mature age, who just a few months ago was returning to education after 30 years. She was a learner who I met right at the start of my time at Straight A and was commencing an NVQ in Housekeeping at level 2. Anne was seemingly terrified at the prospect of entering education once more and wasn’t afraid of expressing her fears. Although she lacked confidence in her written ability, her knowledge of the course standards was sound.
Her assessor took it upon themselves to tailor Anne’s course to best suit Anne’s learning needs. I saw Anne recently and the change was phenomenal, she is not simply acquiring a qualification but she has improved her confidence and ability to learn and develop within her occupation. Anne informed me that she is hoping to complete another NVQ in Customer Service after completing her current one. I find stories like this captivating and just knowing that I will play a part of somebody else’s learning journey is a very endearing thought.
